Revelation 16:8-9
“8 And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun; and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire.
9 And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues: and they repented not to give him glory.”
The Bible prophesies what will happen in the last days, and in the Book of Revelation, the sun-scorched men with fire (Revelation 16:8-9). Are the record-breaking high temperatures a sign of the end days? Are we in the great tribulation that is talked about in the Holy Word of God? We will delve into Biblical scriptures that correlate with the weather and what this means for us?
Clams Bake on Beach
The following excerpt brings two-fold problems with heat that tie into Biblical prophecy (Matthew 24:7, and Revelation 16:8-9). One is temperatures rising and its ramifications to people and crops, and secondly, the loss of shellfish that is regularly harvested to sell is dying due to the heat,
Friday 2- “A heat dome in the Pacific Northwest that raised temperatures to 121 degrees Fahrenheit this past week caused blackouts, deaths and cooked clams on a Washington State beach” (1a)
Heat Roaring and Soaring
In the headlines, we find that temperatures are soaring in Canada,
Sunday 27-“Canada broke a national heat record on Sunday when the temperature in a small town in British Columbia reached almost 116 degrees Fahrenheit, breaking an 84-year-old record by nearly 3 degrees, with dangerously hot weather expected to continue for several more days.” (1)
Tuesday 30-“Canada set a new all-time high-temperature record for the third day in a row Tuesday, reaching 121 degrees Fahrenheit (49.5 degrees Celsius) in Lytton, about 155 miles (250 kilometers) east of Vancouver, the country’s weather service, Environment Canada, reported. Canada set a new all-time high-temperature record for the third day in a row Tuesday, reaching 121 degrees.” (2)
UP UP UP
Not only are the temperatures spiking in Canada, but the US is setting record high temperatures as well,
“Portland International Airport reached a record-high 116 degrees. Monday’s record-setting heat broke Sunday’s record of 112 degrees. Sunday had broken the 108-degree record set on Saturday.” (3)
Heat Dome
June 30th-“The heatwave baking the U.S. Pacific Northwest and British Columbia, Canada, is of an intensity never recorded by modern humans. By one measure, it is more rare than a once in a 1,000 year event — which means that if you could live in this particular spot for 1,000 years, you’d likely only experience a heat dome like this once, if ever.” (3b)
July 02nd- “Historic heatwave continues across interior sections of the Northwest and Northern Rockies. Highs approaching 110 are likely Wednesday but will be closer to 100 on Thursday. Excessive Heat Warnings remain in effect for the region.” (4)
So, we just read about the dangerously high heat. Could this be the great scorching the Bible talks about in Revelation? In order to look at current events to see if we could be in the vial judgments, we must look at the verses.
Revelation 16:8-9
“8 And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun; and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire.
9 And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues: and they repented not to give him glory.”
Scorched –”to be tortured with intense heat, of the heat of fever.” (5)
Fire-“fire, fiery, or lightning.” (6)
Heat-“painful and burning heat.” (7)
Repented-“to change one’s mind for better, heartily to amend with abhorrence of one’s past sins.” (8)
Perhaps it is more understandable as this, men were tortured with fiery, painful, and burning heat did not repent or amend for past sins, and refused to glorify God (Revelation 16:8-9).
The word scorched in Revelation 16 is the same word Jesus uses in Matthew 13:6, where he taught that those with no root would be scorched like a plant with no deep root withers away in the heat.
Matthew 13:6
“And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away.”
Withered-“to become dry, to be dry.” (9)
Root- “to strike deep root.” (10)
Those who had no root in Christ, the root of Jesse, dried up in the heat of life.
Matthew 13:21
“Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended.”
Root- “spoken of one who has but a superficial experience of divine truth, has not permitted it to make its way into the inmost recesses of his soul and root to strike deep.” (10b) (10b)
Tribulation– “anguish, burdened, persecution, tribulation, trouble.” (11)
Word- “the sayings of God, decree, mandate or order, of the moral precepts given by God, Old Testament prophecy given by the prophets.” (12)
Offended/Falls-“to put a stumbling block or impediment in the way, upon which another may trip and fall, metaph. to offend, to entice to sin, to cause a person to begin to distrust and desert one whom he ought to trust and obey.” (13)
In Matthew 13:21, Christ uses a parable of roots to warn those who have no internal root of the Truth that they will fall away and be offended and desert the teachings of Christ in the midst of tribulation, anguish, or trouble.
Christian take the warning of Jesus Christ and grow deep roots so when the troubles of life come, you will not reject the Lord. If you do fall away in your persecution, then someday you will be like the ones who blaspheme God and do not repent for their evil ways.
How do we have deep roots in our faith? Reading the Bible, praying, and fasting are all important to grow deep roots in Christ. Christ knew what would happen to each person who had no roots in their faith and warned them using the illustrations of plant life, and it is vital we understand Christ cautioned His followers to cultivate roots lest they wither away.
Are we in the great tribulation written in the Bible and spoken of by the Christ? Is this high heat that is encompassing North America killing shellfish and drying the land one of the vial judgments? It is too early to tell at this point; however, we know the great heat will lead to food shortages and drought, with water becoming a scarce commodity in the western USA. Christian gird yourself, stand strong in the Lord, and be as the watchmen who watch and warn of the coming threat. Bible prophecy is only way to know where we are in Gods timeline. I must close now, and for those who are eager to hear from the Word we will be going into more Biblical prophecy in current events in upcoming articles.
