The United States government has overstepped its bounds in the areas of political taxation and burdensome taxes of the American people. The United States government pays for welfare, benefits and stipends, all of which adds up to 61% of the federal budget (Federal Spending: Where Does the Money Go). These taxes also include paying for health care that covers abortion in certain states (Federal Spending: Where Does the Money Go). Taxes are also used as a tool by politicians to silence whatever side of an argument they approve or disapprove, such as the burdensome taxes on the Second Amendment (Sessegnon, E., 2019 October 1). The revenues from taxes are also used to pay for research in areas that are purely political such as global warming, climate change, or whatever the new term is this year (GAO). The increase of the American government’s tents of authority over areas where the community is meant to take care of the people, has created a “nanny state.”
Our Founding Fathers understood the Biblical view that government should be limited, without burdensome taxes to keep it running. The Word of God is not against taxes for a government staying within its bounds of the power given to it.
“They said to Him, “Caesar’s.” Then He said to them, “Then render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s; and to God the things that are God’s.” – Matthew 22:21
However, the intent of the Scripture does not include or approve of using taxation for unjust means, such as funding abortion or choking opposition funds. Although a person is still called to pay taxes, these taxes were intended to only fund the government for limited reasons, such as punishing evil.
“14 or to governors as sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and the praise of those who do right.” – 1 Peter 2:14
Taxes are meant to be used for reasons as in 1 Peter 2:14 states not for funding welfare or abortions. The Scripture does not condone the killing of innocent blood, which is what abortion is since God sees the baby in the womb as a person.
“5 “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, And before you were born I consecrated you;” – Jeremiah 1:5
A Christian should be focused on defunding such things as Planned Parenthood. Although Christians are not directly funding these operations, our resources are being taken by force to be handed to such institutions that take part in such heinous actions as the murder of babies (Planned Parenthood). Since it is not the Christian’s choice where the money goes, the fault is not upon the individual but the nation. Taxes are set up if one refuses to pay taxes, their property will start being taken by the government, if the person refuses to give up their property to pay for what they owe, they will meet the end of the barrel (Department of Justice, 2019 May 7). Sadly, these people have no choice but to indirectly fund these operations, lest they end up not being able to care for their family.
Taxes were never meant to pay for such things as these. In this instance, the American government is overstepping their Biblical principles, becoming the mother of the people instead of a government. The mindset of postmodern politicians is explained by Henry Hazlitt,
“Everywhere government spending is presented as a panacea for all our economic ills…An enormous is based on this fallacy, and, as so often happens with doctrines of this sort, it has become part of an intricate network of fallacies that mutually support each other.” (Hazlitt, H. 1979)
Even though the postmodernist believes the government can take care of everything, using the government to take care of those in need does not really help because the community is meant to be the answer to those in need instead of the government. The community is comprised of churches, neighbors, and groups of people working together, such as nonprofit organizations. Local nonprofits would be able to effectively take care of those in need since America is part of the five leading countries in donations (CAF 2018). The community should be the ones to help, instead of citizens being forced to help by the government through redistribution of wealth.
“17 But whoever has the world’s goods, and sees his brother in need and closes his heart against him, how does the love of God abide in him?” – 1 John 3:17
Citizens being able to choose where they wish to donate aid to causes is the method not only of the free market but the just way. This way, local churches, food banks, and homeless shelters will be able to take care of the people properly. Local organizations know their community; they will know which people need resources, money, or food. Federal or state agencies are distant “nanny states,” with the only difference being they only know people by their skin color, and their yearly salary. A local community knows the people in their home area far more than a governmental worker. It is that very proximity to their neighbors that makes the community far better informed to pass out the donations made by people than a distant government. The community knows who really needs help, who is addicted to substances, and who is a single mother. In the welfare system, [which is just the redistribution of wealth], the government has overstepped their bounds, and in their policies to help the needy and the government has, in fact, created or worsened addiction instead of helping the needy.
Another form of taxation that is heinous is the use of taxes for political means. Increase taxes on goods that are deemed evil by one party and good by another should never occur (Kartch, J., 2016 April 18). Burdensome taxes on goods is one of the reasons the American Revolution took place; a tyrannical government increased taxes (Becker, A. M., 2019). The Boston tea party was a revolt against the burdensome taxes (Becker, A. M., 2019). The founders of the American government fought for liberty to get away from burdensome taxes, so why should the modern government put its people back under this yoke of bondage that our fathers fought to be free from.
“1 It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery.” – Galatians 5:1
The second reason is the Biblical God does not desire control over people, and if the item is not deemed evil by the Word of God, the government has no business in such a matter. The government becomes the oppressive ruler by taxing for political means. It oversteps its bounds and tries to control the people through backdoor methods. Luke 4:18 speaks of Jesus freeing people from such tyrants.
“18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
Because He anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor.
He has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives,
And recovery of sight to the blind,
To set free those who are oppressed,” – Luke 4:18
The last form of taxation that the government jumped out of its pig pen from is burdensome taxes.
“1 Woe to those who enact evil statutes
And to those who constantly record unjust decisions,
2 So as to deprive the needy of justice
And rob the poor of My people of their rights,
So that widows may be their spoil
And that they may plunder the orphans.
3 Now what will you do in the day of punishment,
And in the devastation which will come from afar?
To whom will you flee for help?
And where will you leave your wealth?” – Isaiah 10:1-3
Isaiah 10 warns the nations that enact evil statutes that hurt the needy. When taxes are burdensome as they have been lately in America, these statutes affect the poor. Burdensome taxes are part of the reason the American Revolution occurred, since they fought to escape such heavy taxes (Becker, A. M., 2019). The reason why such high taxes are even desired is that the government needs more money to become the “nanny state.” So as political leaders push policies this way, the people must pay for the “nanny state” out of their income. Forcing Citizens of the United States to be put under such a yoke of bondage is not only tyrannical; it comes against Biblical precepts.
Taxes are important in order to fund the government to do its job but should be kept on a short chain. The United States Government has come out of their fenced-in area, the people of the United States designated to them when this country was founded. The United States Government has also stepped out of the enclosed area the Scripture has given to it. The Bible does not read thy government shall supply all thy needs. It says,
“19 But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” -Philippians 4:19
By overstepping its power into areas it has no business in, the government has turned more tyrannical and oppressive to her citizens. Sadly, just as frogs are boiled slowly to eat, the American people do not know their freedoms are slowly being eroded away. Only with the power of the people is it possible to push back this tyranny, for the United States Constitution has given the power to the people. Petitioning the government becomes a plausible means of taking back freedom, however will the people awake from their boiling bath to claim their rights back or will they stay in the boiling water of liberties lost and join the frog in the soup?
